The Artist: Vanessa Krinkel

PROFILE
CONTEMPORARY ART
For over 30 years and in various roles, Vanessa has been passionately involved in facilitating, supplying and advocating for both the Wellington and Wairarapa creative communities. Now in 2023, having settled in the Waikanae community, she has finally found time to apply that passion and dedication to practising, developing and crafting her own creativity.
When she’s at work, Vanessa becomes utterly engrossed in her practice. Fully immersed, music turned up loud, colour and medium flying, she reflects on images, places and emotions to create her contemporary oil and mixed media paintings.
Each piece is an invitation to the observer, a call to recollect or imagine a time and place of serenity, emotion and wonder.
There are contrasts in texture and hue that suggest the opposition of forces. Exuberant, moody and often surprising, Vanessa’s images offer energy with a hint of the unknown.
INSPIRATION INFLUENCES  MATERIALS

Vanessa is drawn to the stunning New Zealand landscape, in particular Central Otago, the West Coast and Fiordland National Park.

Within earthy colours each piece offers discovery though texture and movement, her process is rooted in memory, imagination, and emotions.

Vanessa’s exploration and the use of texture and movement through the application of medium and colour is a a constant source of joy and inspiration for her.

Early memories of her Great Grandfather and Nana Joan, both accomplished artists, sparked initial interestand intrigue.

As a teenager, family friend and local Wellington artist, Cherie McLaughlan, captivated and inspired Vanessa to pursue and study art.

More recently, Vanessa’s Mum, Sandy Miller, a well known and highly regarded international glass mosaic artist, inspired by showing that creativity can be discovered at any age.
